Dr Sheridan had a very special, and rare, visitor last week. This little Red Tail Black Cockatoo presented to the clinic unable to stand normally. The owner had found it in the nest of her breeding pair, and an interesting side note black cockatoos lay their eggs in hollowed out logs!

Dr Sheridan examined the little bird and found a suspect fracture, the bird was x-rayed under a general anaesthetic and a break in the leg bone was confirmed. (see inset photo – the quality is a bit fuzzy on camera!)

The leg was cast to help aid in healing, which happens quiet quickly in growing birds. The owner is now handrearing the chick. Photos of the little cutie and its cast can be seen below. The chick will be back in 2 weeks to have the cast taken off and more x-rays taken.
